This article surveys Alternative Cinema movements in world cinema and Iranian cinema, and presents a case study of Ammar Film Festival. Initially, three types of alternative cinema in the history of film are examined in brief: The Independent Cinema of Unites States, Avant-Garde Cinema in France & the Third Cinema of Argentina. The conditions that led to the emergence of each movement, including political, social, economical & aesthetic, are explored to find out if there are any correlation between them & alternative forms of Iranian cinema after the Islamic Revolution. The theoretical framework of the present article is based on Critical Theory of Frankfurt School. This perspective enables a combination of socio-economical and textual analysis of artworks. Apart from the descriptive & comparative analysis in the first part of the paper, a series of in-depth interview with filmmakers and academics of the field were conducted & participatory observation in workshops of alternative cinema and Ammar Film Festival has been undertaken for this study. The initial argument of this article is that after the Islamic Revolution Iranian Cinema became an alternative cinema on the world stage. It is also argued that other alternative cinemas emerged within Iranian cinema that try not only to distinguish themselves from world cinemas but also distance themselves from the mainstream Iranian cinema. Ammar Film Festival has been studied in this paper as a case to identify the differences between this movement & other alternative cinemas in the world.
