The Role of Watching Redemption Movies and Life Design Counseling on the Well-Being of Iranian Adults

Abstract
Some specific narrations of life, known as the narrations of redemption, are positively correlated with psychological well-being. The present study aims to compare the effect of watching special films (with and without interpretation), based on McAdams’ theory and Savikas’ Life Design counseling, in creating and promoting the self-redemption experience and thus promoting the adults’ well-being. The narrative of redemption is a specific form or strategy of narrative in which an obviously bad event, an emotional state, or a negative situation turns into a good ending or a positive emotional outcome. This is a quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test in which 24 adults in the age range of 24 to 65 years with bachelor's degree and higher were selected by available sampling method through the online announcement and randomly assigned to four control and experimental groups; that is watching movies without interpretation, watching movies with interpretation, and making life counseling. The Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance. The results showed that although the effect of watching movies (with and without interpretation) and life-making counseling on the discovery and promotion of self-rescue experience and function is not quantitatively significant (p >0.05), these interventions have caused qualitative changes among the individuals. This issue is very important considering the significance of self-redemption in promoting the psychological well-being of individuals.
