Following the Trump administration's anti-Iranian decisions to designate Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization and subsequently assassinate General Qasem Soleimani, Meta’s social platforms (Facebook and Instagram) have been removing countless posts about General Soleimani, and the accounts just mentioning Qasem Soleimani in an unprecedented way. In order to provide solutions to abolish and neutralize such censorship, the present study seeks to evaluate the legitimacy of these restrictions on the basis of Meta’s community guidelines, the company's statements, and the United States law. The findings of this investigation showed that neither the presence of General Soleimani on the US social platforms nor supporting him by other users is prohibited by US law. Therefore, Meta’s claim about its “legal obligations to US sanctions laws” to justify the censorship is totally unfounded. Additionally, in many cases, the implementation of the restrictions even contradicts Meta’s own rules. Finally, the current study provides compelling evidence that Meta’s censorship of General Soleimani is an example of government censorship, which is illegal in the US legal system. Hence, the solutions suggested by this paper could be used to force Meta to lift its censorship and put an end to the restrictions preventing users from sharing their thoughts about General Qasem Soleimani on Facebook and Instagram.
